Legal Heroin.....woot?
The Swiss have just voted in a legal heroin program. That's right, it's LEGAL for people to go to one of two centers where a nurse will help them shoot up with government-produced heroine, and the healthcare system is paying for it. Now, the story claims that the people shooting up were selected, whatever that means. I have mixed feelings about this.
I have never figured out where I stand on drug use. I know I don't want to use any of them, because I've seen plenty of people messed up on or because of drugs. I'm also not sure if cheaper, legal drugs would be any better for some people. And whether they would or not, I'm not sure I like the government telling me what I can and can't do, regardless of whether or not I want to.
On the other hand, I don't want my kids doing drugs at all of any sort, and anything to help keep that from happening is worth looking at in my book.
And on yet another side, anti-smoking programs are finally paying off in decreasing lung-cancer deaths and cigarettes are quite legal, although I don't want to see hundreds of millions of people on heroin before it gets better. I'd like to see what happens in a couple of years. I'm still trying to find out what happened to the Canadian program where they were giving free alcohol to alcoholics, but I can't find anything about how that turned out. Let me know if you know.
