I'm a diy kinda guy...
DIYers unite!!! Now, I'm the kind of guy that likes to do things myself. Leeanne wants a table, I want to build it. I need an engine for my car, I want to build it. Except for laundry. She can do ALL of that. If I ever want to learn to build some bacteria, I'm going to diybio.org. I'm kinda thinking it's cool that people want to do some bioengineering in their garages. One of my biggest gripes is that people don't pay any attention to science, and this seems like it will bring things down to the common guy just a little bit. I mean, hell, here I am typing away on my very on web page, and fifteen years ago I wouldn't have dreamed it. Maybe there will be "build your own bacteria" kits in the future. Kinda like going to instructables.com and finding schematics for a really cool phone charger made out of old solar lamps, you could go and find somebody who has made something really cool and recreate it yourself. There is a woman working on making a yogurt bacteria glow green in the presence of melamine, for example, which just killed a bunch of small babies.
On the other hand, I've read a lot of Stephen King, and I've got to worry a little bit that something will go eerily awry, and the government will come lock down my town for us all to die under quarentine because some jackass was monkeying with the wrong virus today. At any rate, really cool that people are learning this way and probably teaching their kids good science. Hopefully it is more good that bad.
