Woman with amazing powers in Brittain!!!
OK, I know this isn't really a science/tech story, but it illustrates the need for just a little bit of critical thiniking. Unfortunately, we may never get any of that from some reporters. Here is a link to the story . To recap, this lady's amazing power isn't what she claims it to be, in my opinion. It isn't that she can get metal to stick to her body through some sort of magnetism, but rather that she can convince anyone that that is exactly what she's doing. Here is a picture from the article, with what I believe is the photographer's name in the bottom left hand corner.

First I'd like to note that all the surfaces the objects are stuck to tilt a little upward, so friction gets to help them stay put. Second, I'd like to note that even though she claims should couldn't wear watches as a child because her field interfered with them, as she's gotten older and her "power" has gotten stronger, she's managed to start wearing a watch now. Third, one of the objects is an uncoated brass key, which is, as I understand it, just as non-magnetic in Brittain as it would be in the US. In fact, I would like to add another picture.

Anyone who's known me for long has seen me do this repeatedly, without any preparation, although I usually use a backwards story. I have a scar on my forehead, and I claim a metal plate is behind it and I stick a magnet to my face instead of the other way around. I never imagined anyone would believe I was the MAGNET. Some of us just have more oily skin than others, and that sticks objects in place. Period. If she washes her face with good soap, or dusts herself with some baby powder, she won't be able to do it anymore. Period.
